What is a first then board?
A first then board shows your child two things: what happens first, and what comes right after. "First shoes on, then car ride." The first half is a short task. The then half is something your child looks forward to. A toddler who can't follow a long list can follow two pictures, which is why a first then visual schedule works so well for toddlers and preschoolers.
In the UK the same idea is called a now and next board, and schools and nurseries use now and next cards every day. Some families add a third picture and make it a now next then board. This maker prints both wordings: pick First / Then or Now / Next, or write your own two words, like Work / Play.
How to make a first then board
- Pick the words. First / Then is the common US name, Now / Next is what UK schools say. Use whatever your child hears at daycare or school, so home and school match.
- Add your pairs. Each pair becomes one card: a short task on the left, something motivating on the right. Tap a picture to swap it, or tap a ready-made pair like "wash hands, then cookie".
- Choose the card size. Four cards per page suits a first then board for home. Two per page gives big cards for the fridge, six per page gives pocket cards for the diaper bag.
- Print and cut. Download the free first then board printable, cut along the dashed lines, and laminate the cards if you want them to last. Turn on the hole to make a first then board for a lanyard or keyring, so the cards come along to the store or the doctor's.
How to use first then cards at home
- Keep the first part short. It should take minutes, not an hour. "Two more bites" works. "Clean your whole room" puts the reward too far away for a toddler.
- Make the then part real. Pick something your child actually wants, and give it right after. If the then never shows up, the card stops working.
- One card at a time. Hold up the card, say it out loud ("first shoes, then car") and point to each half. When the first part is done, point to the then side and follow through.
- Stay consistent. Use the same words every time, and use the cards in easy moments too, not only in battles. Kids learn the pattern fastest when it's predictable.
When two steps feel easy, a longer picture schedule is the natural next step: the visual schedule maker prints picture cards for the whole morning or afternoon. Working on one habit over a few weeks? A reward chart with stickers adds the bigger goal. And if screen time is often your then, our guide to screen time as a reward helps you keep it from taking over.
